A Biophilic Family Home in London
Project Overview
This London family home, designed for a couple and their two children, is a thoughtful example of how biophilic principles and sustainable design choices can transform a living space. The clients wanted a home that felt warm and connected to nature, while also embodying responsible sourcing and environmental consciousness.
The result is a modern yet soulful interior, where natural textures, greenery, and curated art pieces create a space that nourishes both people and planet.
Design Challenge
The family desired an open-plan kitchen and dining area that was not only functional for daily life with two children but also felt restorative and calm. Their goal was to bring the outdoors inside, maximise natural light, and use materials with minimal environmental impact.
Key considerations included:
Ensuring durability for a busy family environment.
Prioritising furniture and finishes sourced responsibly.
Introducing greenery and natural textures without clutter.
Creating a space that celebrates individuality while harmonising with the architecture.
Biophilic Design Approach
Natural Light & Views
The open-plan space features wide sliding doors that allow an abundance of daylight to flood the interiors. Views to the garden extend the sense of space, blurring the boundary between indoors and outdoors.
Greenery
Potted plants, from tall structural specimens to smaller succulents, bring layers of natural form and texture into the home. Plants are positioned strategically to soften corners, energise surfaces, and enhance air quality.
Natural Materials
Wood: The use of wooden bar stools, woven pendant lighting, and wicker baskets reinforces a tactile, grounded aesthetic.
Stone & Clay: Ceramic vases and a stone-topped island contribute to the home’s organic palette.
Art & Sculpture: Bronze and wood sculptures add cultural richness and a handcrafted quality that connects with timeless traditions.
Organic Shapes
Curved forms, seen in artwork, accessories, and lighting with echo patterns from nature, creating a calm visual rhythm throughout the space.
Sustainability & Responsible Sourcing
Locally Crafted Joinery: The cabinetry was made by local artisans using FSC-certified timber and water-based finishes.
Reclaimed Elements: Decorative trays and baskets were sourced from reclaimed or recycled materials, ensuring minimal waste.
Eco-Conscious Paints: Low-VOC paints were used to create a safe and healthy environment for the children.
Durable Furnishings: By selecting long-lasting, timeless designs, the family avoids disposable trends, ensuring their home ages gracefully.
Ethically Sourced Art: The sculptures and decorative items were chosen for their cultural authenticity and responsible origins, supporting artisans rather than mass production.
Results & Impact
The home now feels like a natural extension of the family’s lifestyle. Inviting, restorative, and rich with meaning. The children benefit from a calm, light-filled environment that subtly connects them to the outdoors, while the adults enjoy a space that balances sophistication with warmth.
The biophilic design elements support wellbeing, while sustainable sourcing ensures that beauty and responsibility co-exist. The house stands as proof that high-end design in London can be both elegant and environmentally conscious.
